Characteristics
The Labrador retriever is a superior natural retriever and receives top honors as a waterfowl dog. In addition to his claim to fame as a duck and goose retriever, the Lab scores high marks as an upland flushing retriever. With such credits he deserves strong consideration for the owner who desires to hunt upland birds such as pheasants as well as waterfowl.Temperament
The well-bred Labrador retriever exhibits an outgoing disposition and is tractable and friendly. The breed is extremely intelligent, gentle, and responds well to proper training.Health
Over the past decades the Labrador retriever field-trial community has done an outstanding job of policing hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). At Stonecreek Kennels all of our breeding dogs have been X-rayed and their eyes have been certified.Overall, the Labrador retriever ranks high in possessing healthy genetics. A puppy's eyes can be certified at an early age. Buyers are encouraged to buy only from breeders who X-ray and certify eyes.
Care
The Labrador retriever has a short dense coat enabling the breed to handle colder conditions than most breeds. However, the Lab does not dissipate heat well. If housed in an outside kennel, the Lab should be protected from wind, rain, cold, and heat. An overhead sun shield is advised.Labs love to eat and obesity is a health problem for all dogs. Keep the Lab slim, trim, and healthy.
Breeding Program
For more than three decades discerning wingshooters have gunned over our dogs. You likely have read about them or have seen them in action on television. We are proud of our dogs' accomplishments. Our breeding program is dedicated to producing valued family members as well as world-class hunting companions. Stonecreek Labrador retrievers have the stamina and endurance required in an upland hunting dog as well as the power and marking ability necessary for the waterfowler.
"George indeed has some of the finest field dogs you'll ever hunt over."
